A Floating Tribute to the Jet Age

Holland America Line will send the Zuiderdam on a 28-day round trip from Miami starting 30 October 2027, designed around Pan Am's centenary. The cruise retraces Caribbean and Central American routes the airline pioneered during its flying-boat era and later jet-age dominance, when Pan Am operated as the de facto flag carrier of the United States.

The voyage blends onboard programming with shore excursions that connect passengers to the airline's operational history. Former Pan Am cabin crew and aviation historians will lead talks, while menus and cocktails pull directly from the carrier's archival service standards.

What Passengers Will Find Onboard

Holland America has reconstructed elements of Pan Am's Clipper Club lounges, the private airport spaces where passengers once waited between flights. Onboard historians and former employees will share operational stories from the airline's decades of transatlantic and transpacific service.

Actor Willie Aames is scheduled to recount the wartime journey of the Pacific Clipper, while Linda Freire, chair of the Pan Am Museum Foundation and a former flight attendant, will join other former staff to discuss route planning, service protocols, and the airline's influence on the industry.

The dining programme mirrors dishes served in the 1950s and 1960s: prawn cocktail, filet mignon, sole en croûte, and soufflé Grand Marnier with crème anglaise. Two cocktails have been developed for the voyage. The Pan Am Cocktail combines white rum, Campari, orgeat, lemon juice, and egg white. The Clipper Cocktail, originally served on the flying boats, mixes rum, Dolin Blanc, and grenadine.

Shore Excursions Linked to Airline Operations

Several ports of call connect directly to Pan Am's network. In Cartagena, passengers can tour the city in classic roadsters and visit emerald dealers. In Colón, excursions include the Agua Clara Locks and the Panama Canal Railway, infrastructure that predates but parallels the airline's own logistical ambitions in the region.

Antigua's Shirley Heights offers harbour views that Pan Am navigators once used as visual reference points when guiding aircraft into port. Trinidad's Chaguaramas was a base for the airline's seaplanes, and the itinerary includes a visit to the site.

Paul Grigsby, Holland America's vice president of itinerary planning and deployment, said the cruise aims to merge the airline's history with the line's own programming. Craig Carter, chief executive of Pan Am Global Holdings, noted that the itinerary mirrors the carrier's early flying-boat routes.

The Broader Pan Am Revival

The cruise is part of a wider effort to commercialise Pan Am's brand equity. In 2025, a one-off luxury nostalgia flight attracted paying passengers. Pan Am Global Holdings has announced plans for branded airport hotels in Dubai, Bangkok, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney, though timelines and operators have not been finalised.

The airline ceased operations in 1991 after 64 years of service. Its intellectual property has since been licensed for apparel, luggage, and hospitality projects. The Holland America voyage represents the most immersive attempt yet to package the airline's aesthetic and operational history as a consumer experience.

Whether nostalgia alone can sustain a 28-day voyage remains an open question. The cruise targets passengers with both disposable income and a specific affinity for mid-century aviation. Holland America has not disclosed pricing, but similar-length Caribbean itineraries on the Zuiderdam typically start around 8,000 to 12,000 US dollars per person, depending on cabin category and booking timing.

The voyage also highlights a broader trend in travel marketing: selling not just a destination, but a curated version of the past. Pan Am's golden age coincided with a period when air travel was accessible only to a narrow slice of the global population. The cruise offers a way to experience that exclusivity without the constraints of 1960s ticket prices or the realities of period-era service labour conditions.

For those drawn to the aesthetics of the era, the Zuiderdam will provide a month-long immersion. For others, it may serve as a reminder that nostalgia, however polished, is always selective.
