A Return to Growth

Lufthansa Group announced on 20 October 2026 that it will add ten new long-haul destinations and multiple European routes to its summer 2027 schedule. The expansion spans all seven of its airlines and represents the group's most ambitious network growth since the start of the pandemic.

The additions come as the group seeks to rebuild connectivity across its six European hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels and Rome. According to Lufthansa Group, the expansion aims to offer travellers shorter journeys and better connections to business and leisure destinations worldwide.

Frankfurt and Munich Lead the Push

Lufthansa will operate a daily flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo-Narita starting 28 March 2027. This adds to the airline's existing daily services from Frankfurt and Munich to Tokyo-Haneda, giving passengers access to both Tokyo airports. The Frankfurt to Nagoya route, suspended during the pandemic, will also return on 29 March 2027 as a seasonal service.

Two new North American routes will debut from German hubs. From 5 May 2027, Lufthansa will fly Frankfurt to Columbus three times weekly, making it the first and only European carrier to serve Ohio's capital nonstop. Munich to Phoenix launches on 3 August 2027 with three weekly flights, marking the first direct link between Phoenix and any Lufthansa Group hub.

Within Europe, Lufthansa will resume daily flights from Frankfurt to Dubrovnik. The airline is also raising frequencies to Cape Town, Chicago, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, four Indian cities (Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore), Singapore and Montreal. The Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur route, which begins in October 2026, will continue through the summer and expand to daily departures.

Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Expand Regional Networks

SWISS will keep its recently launched Bengaluru service through the summer and increase flights to Tokyo-Narita. The carrier adds Toulouse as a new destination, with twice-weekly flights from Zurich between 25 June and 23 August. SWISS is also boosting frequencies to Budapest, Hamburg, Paris, Nice, Bremen and Niš.

Austrian Airlines will operate a direct Vienna to Beirut route from June to September 2027. The carrier will continue winter services to Mauritius until 22 April 2027 and to Malé until 25 April 2027. Tokyo-Narita and Shanghai return to the schedule at the start of the summer timetable. Transatlantic routes include New York (both JFK and Newark), Washington, Boston, Chicago and Montreal, with Los Angeles rejoining the network in April 2027.

Brussels Airlines introduces Cairo as a new destination with five weekly flights starting in summer 2027. The Belgian carrier will increase its Kilimanjaro service to three times weekly after a successful launch in 2026. Within Europe, Brussels Airlines adds Evenes in Norway and raises frequencies to Porto, Heraklion, Zakynthos and Funchal.

Leisure Carriers Target Long-Haul Growth

Edelweiss will start seasonal flights to Windhoek on 16 March 2027 and increase frequencies to Zanzibar, Punta Cana, Malé and Tampa Bay. Discover Airlines, the group's newer leisure brand, will launch Frankfurt to Edmonton in June 2027, adding a third Canadian destination alongside Calgary and Halifax. The airline will also raise its Munich to Windhoek service to five weekly departures.

ITA Airways will begin flying Rome Fiumicino to Caracas on 30 March 2027, strengthening connections between Italy and Venezuela. The Italian carrier will also launch a domestic route from Rome to Verona on 28 March 2027.

Capacity Meets Demand

The expansion reflects a calculated bet on sustained travel demand across leisure and business segments. By spreading new routes across its portfolio, Lufthansa Group reduces risk while testing multiple markets simultaneously. The mix of year-round and seasonal services allows the group to allocate aircraft flexibly, particularly during European summer peaks.

Columbus and Phoenix represent secondary US cities with limited transatlantic options, potentially offering less competition and stronger yields than saturated coastal markets. Cairo and Beirut tap into diaspora traffic and business travel between Europe and the Middle East. The addition of multiple Japanese routes suggests confidence in sustained demand from both European tourists and business travellers as Japan's economy continues to recover.

Frequency increases to Indian cities align with growing business ties between Europe and South Asia, as well as rising outbound leisure travel from India. The group's focus on connecting secondary cities rather than only capital airports may help it capture travellers who previously faced longer connections.

Eurowings, the group's low-cost carrier, will announce its summer schedule separately. The timing of this expansion, coming more than six years after the pandemic began, signals that Lufthansa Group believes the industry has stabilised enough to support sustained long-term growth rather than temporary capacity additions.
