A Four-Decade Property Gets a Fresh Identity
The Loews Nashville Hotel at Vanderbilt Plaza has completed a comprehensive renovation that touches every public space and guest room in the 341-room property. Built in 1984, the hotel has been a fixture in Nashville's Midtown neighbourhood for more than 40 years. The redesign, led by South Florida-based Studio DADO, draws on the city's music heritage without leaning into obvious clichés.
Guest rooms now feature soft, neutral palettes with subtle nods to Nashville's creative identity woven into the design. The lobby has been reconfigured as an open-concept space, anchored by a 53-foot sculptural chandelier and a new grand staircase linking the lobby and mezzanine levels. Behind the reception desk, a custom glass installation depicts brass instruments, a restrained gesture towards the city's musical roots.
Two New Dining Concepts
The renovation introduces two restaurants. Maisonette Patisserie & Coffee, an all-day café and marketplace, occupies a corner of the lobby. Masons at West End, a chef-led American restaurant and bar, will host live performances by local Nashville musicians. The programming aims to bring the city's talent into the hotel rather than relying solely on décor to signal place.
The final phase of the project, scheduled to open in January 2027, will add a renovated 8,500-square-foot ballroom and adjoining foyer, plus a new outdoor lawn designed as an open-air gathering space. Meeting and event infrastructure matters in Nashville, where tourism increasingly revolves around conferences, weddings, and group bookings.
A Market Leaning Into Luxury
Nashville's hotel pipeline has thickened in recent years, particularly at the upper end. The Westin Nashville recently finished a $13.5 million renovation of its rooms and meeting spaces. Last month, the 245-room SongTeller Hotel opened, featuring a museum dedicated to Dolly Parton. The Nashville Edition, a Marriott International luxury project, and a 326-room Pendry Hotels & Resorts property are both in development.
The shift reflects a broader change in the city's visitor profile. Nashville has moved beyond its reputation as a bachelor-party destination, drawing corporate groups, luxury travellers, and international visitors. Hotels are responding with higher-end product and more sophisticated programming.
The Loews renovation also speaks to the challenge facing older properties in fast-evolving markets. A hotel built in the mid-1980s risks feeling dated even if it has been well maintained. Full-property redesigns, especially those that rethink public spaces and food and beverage offerings, are one way to stay competitive without starting from scratch.
What It Signals
Loews Hotels & Resorts, based in New York City, operates 26 properties across the United States. The Nashville hotel is one of its older assets, and the investment suggests confidence in the city's trajectory. Hugh Anderson, the property's general manager, described the renovation as building on the hotel's legacy rather than erasing it.
The timing aligns with Nashville's broader momentum. The city has attracted significant corporate investment, including Amazon's Operations Centre of Excellence, and its population has grown steadily. Tourism arrivals have rebounded strongly since 2020, driven by both leisure and business travel.
For travellers, the renovated Loews offers a base in Midtown, a neighbourhood that sits between downtown's honky-tonks and the residential areas further south. It is close to Vanderbilt University, the Gulch, and Music Row, making it a practical choice for visitors who want proximity to multiple districts without being in the thick of Lower Broadway.
The project also illustrates a broader trend in U.S. hotel design: a move away from generic luxury towards interiors that reference local culture in thoughtful, specific ways. Studio DADO's work at Loews Nashville avoids the trap of turning the city's music identity into a theme-park aesthetic. The result is a hotel that feels rooted in place without announcing it at every turn.
