Scotland witnessed a partial eclipse with 98 percent coverage in March 2015, when the path of totality crossed the Faroe Islands and Svalbard. This August, Edinburgh is forecast to see 91 percent of the sun blocked, a respectable showing though less dramatic than southwestern England.
For those willing to cross the Irish Sea, Mizen Head in County Cork, one of Ireland's most southwestern points, could deliver nearly 97.5 percent coverage. The extra distance makes a measurable difference in how much of the solar disk disappears.
Safety Comes First
Viewing a solar eclipse without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage. Eclipse glasses that meet international safety standards are essential. The Royal Astronomical Society provides guidance on safe observation methods, including how to construct pinhole viewers from household items. These simple devices project an image of the eclipsed sun onto a surface, allowing indirect viewing without risk.
