From Farmland to Wellness Hub

Prince Edward County sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Ontario, roughly two and a half hours from Toronto and three and a half from Montreal. Twenty years ago, it was farmland and fishing villages. Today, it rivals Muskoka as an upscale summer escape, with boutique hotels, chef-driven restaurants, and a growing wellness scene that extends beyond the spa menu.

Three properties have committed to wellness programming that goes deeper than a massage add-on. They offer hydrotherapy, fitness clubs, and year-round activities designed for city dwellers looking to reset without flying across the continent.

Wander the Resort: Nordic Spa Meets Lakefront Calm

Wander the Resort, a 10,000-square-foot lakefront property in Bloomfield, opened in 2021. Its Nordic spa followed in January 2025. The spa centers on traditional Scandinavian thermotherapy: alternating hot saunas and cold plunges to improve circulation and lower stress. Treatments include hot stone massage, reiki, and sauna rituals.

The design leans into Scandinavian minimalism with neutral tones, clean lines, and an open-concept lobby. The on-site restaurant, Gather, sources locally and serves lobster rolls, seared pickerel, roasted squash with lentils and burrata, and Cubano sandwiches with baguette fries.

For day visitors, Wander offers a Summer Club Day Pass that includes access to the hydrotherapy circuit, outdoor pools, and Whisper Beach, a private lakefront stretch. Owner Shannon Hunter describes the property as a place where time stands still, even if only for an afternoon.

The Royal Hotel and Claramount Club: Heritage Meets High-Intensity Fitness

The Royal Hotel occupies a Victorian building on Picton's main street, dating to 1879 and reopened in 2021 after a full renovation. It has 33 rooms, an Italian-inspired restaurant, and the Counter, a lobby bar that has become a local meeting point.

Wellness programming runs throughout the week. Sunday mornings bring yoga in the park. Tuesdays feature the Royal Running Club. Wednesdays host boot camp sessions in the gym, led by Danielle Reynolds of Coach Haus, a local boutique fitness studio known for high-intensity workouts. The property also has an outdoor pool, sauna, facials, and massage treatments.

Coach Haus operates out of the Claramount Club, a Georgian estate built in the early 1900s and now converted into a waterfront hotel and private club. The Claramount offers gym access, group fitness classes, nutritional consulting, an indoor pool, and outdoor tennis courts. It sits a short walk from downtown Picton and functions as a fitness anchor for the area.

The Drake Devonshire: Hipster Aesthetic Meets Lakeside Recovery

The Drake Devonshire in Wellington is the countryside sibling of Toronto's Drake Hotel, known since the early 2000s for promoting local musicians and artists. The Devonshire carries the same artistic energy but swaps Queen Street West for a lakefront setting.

The lobby displays the Drake's signature Canadiana aesthetic. Outside, the property offers pickleball, boules, and rentals for bikes, paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks. A sundeck area encourages lounging. An outdoor sauna and contrast hydrotherapy experience help guests recover after activity.

Overnight guests receive complimentary passes to the Bloomfield Wellness Club, which has state-of-the-art cardio and weight training equipment for self-guided workouts.

Why the Shift Matters

Prince Edward County has long been recognized for its wineries and farm-to-table dining. The wellness infrastructure is newer but growing quickly. These three properties represent a shift in how the region positions itself: not just as a place to eat and drink well, but as a place to move, breathe, and recover.

The appeal lies in proximity. A three-hour drive from two major cities makes weekend wellness trips feasible without airport hassle. The lakefront setting provides natural scenery without requiring backcountry logistics.

Sandbanks Provincial Park, with its trails and dunes, adds another layer of outdoor access for visitors who want to combine hotel amenities with time in nature.

What to Expect

Accommodations across these properties range from heritage Victorian rooms to Scandinavian-minimalist lakefront suites. Programming varies by season. Summer brings outdoor hydrotherapy and beach access. Winter leans into sauna rituals and indoor fitness classes.

Pricing reflects the upscale positioning. Day passes and shorter stays offer entry points for travelers testing the area before committing to a longer visit.

The wellness offerings are not experimental. Hydrotherapy, Nordic spa traditions, and boutique fitness classes are established practices that have been adapted to a lakeside setting. The county's draw is less about novelty and more about execution: well-designed spaces, consistent programming, and proximity to urban centers.

Prince Edward County's wellness scene is still evolving. But the infrastructure is in place, and the region is no longer just a winery weekend.
