Early Bookings Now Open
MSC Cruises has started taking reservations for its summer 2028 Alaska programme, returning MSC Poesia to Seattle for a third consecutive year. The season runs from late April through mid-September, with weekly seven-night departures calling at four ports and offering scenic glacier viewing.
The itineraries include stops at Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, and Victoria in British Columbia. Each sailing also features a passage through Tracy Arm, where passengers can view the Sawyer Glaciers from the ship.
Opening bookings more than two years in advance reflects sustained demand for Alaska cruising among travellers seeking wildlife encounters and wilderness landscapes. Frank Van den Steen, Country Manager Benelux at MSC Cruises, noted that the region continues to draw interest for its combination of scenery and the chance to experience a destination many consider unique.
Ship Upgrades Ahead of Deployment
The 2028 season will be MSC Poesia's first full Alaska deployment following a significant refurbishment. The ship now features MSC Yacht Club, a suite-only section with 69 accommodations, 24-hour butler and concierge service, a private restaurant and lounge, an exclusive sundeck with whirlpools, and a dedicated grill venue.
The refresh also added two specialty dining options: Butcher's Cut, an American-style steakhouse, and Kaito Sushi Bar, offering Japanese-inspired dishes. Other enhancements include an upgraded MSC Aurea Spa, a modernised Technogym fitness centre, a barber, and the Top 15 Exclusive Solarium reserved for Aurea guests.
These additions position the ship to serve passengers looking for premium experiences alongside Alaska's natural attractions. Van den Steen highlighted the MSC Yacht Club as a feature particularly valued by guests from the Benelux market.
Glaciers and Coastal Access
The seven-night route balances natural landmarks with cultural stops. Ketchikan offers insight into fishing traditions and Alaska Native heritage. Icy Strait Point, operated by Indigenous communities, provides wildlife viewing and locally managed tourism activities. Juneau serves as a gateway to glaciers and outdoor pursuits, while Victoria blends historic architecture with waterfront settings.
Cruise Director Matías Chimicz pointed to glacier viewing as one of the most memorable aspects of the voyage, alongside opportunities to observe whales, orcas, bald eagles, bears, deer, otters, and harbour seals. Some passengers have spotted whales directly from the ship during sailings.
The Tracy Arm passage, a fjord flanked by steep cliffs and waterfalls, brings passengers within view of the Sawyer Glaciers without requiring a shore excursion. This type of scenic cruising has become a signature element of Alaska itineraries, offering access to environments that are difficult to reach by land.
Onboard Programming and Broader Deployment
Beyond port calls, the ship offers live entertainment, international dining, family facilities, and wellness options. One production, Dirty Dancing: In Concert, features live singers, dancers, and musicians performing alongside the film.
MSC Cruises is also accepting bookings for its 2027 Alaska season, which runs from late April to late September 2027. Between Alaska deployments, MSC Poesia will operate Grand Voyage sailings through the Panama Canal, connecting Miami and Seattle.
The multi-year commitment to Alaska reflects broader industry patterns. The region has seen steady growth in cruise capacity over the past decade, driven by travellers seeking cooler-climate destinations and experiences centred on nature rather than beaches or cities. Weekly departures from Seattle also simplify logistics for passengers in the Pacific Northwest and western Canada.
Planning Considerations
Seven-night itineraries allow for a survey of Alaska's Inside Passage without the time commitment of longer voyages. The April-to-September window aligns with the region's short summer season, when daylight hours are longest and wildlife is most active.
Travellers booking this far ahead gain access to early pricing and cabin selection, though they also assume the risk of itinerary changes or personal schedule shifts. Cruise lines typically release Alaska inventory two to three years in advance, particularly for ships that split their year between multiple regions.
Victoria, the only non-Alaska port, serves a regulatory function: U.S. maritime law requires foreign-flagged ships on domestic routes to call at a foreign port. The city's gardens, museums, and harbour also provide a contrast to the wilderness stops earlier in the voyage.
For passengers weighing Alaska options, factors to consider include ship size, onboard amenities, port selection, and the balance between sea days and port calls. MSC Poesia carries fewer passengers than the largest Alaska ships, which can mean less crowding in ports but also fewer onboard facilities compared to newer, larger vessels.
The 2028 programme extends MSC's Alaska presence into a third year, offering travellers another option in a market dominated by a handful of cruise lines. Whether the deployment continues beyond 2028 will likely depend on booking performance and the line's broader fleet strategy.
